Hi, I'm Dr Holly Jones
Do you have physical health challenges?
I specialise in the psychological impact of physical health conditions and treatments in 12-24 year olds.
I specialise in the psychological impact of physical health conditions and treatments in 12-24 year olds.
I want to enable young people aged 12-24 living with a physical health condition to manage the psychological and social impact of the illness, move through adolescence alongside the challenges and build fulfilling lives based on the things that matter to them.
Our physical health and mental health are closely linked. Living with a visible or invisible long term illness can have physical and practical effects, and impact on our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Psychological support can help to manage these challenges and get on with living a good life.
Adolescence occurs between the ages of 12-24 (that long!). It's an exciting and challenging time when the brain rapidly changes to prepare for adulthood. Young people try new things, connect with friends in different ways, feel more intense emotions and push back on existing ways of being. These are healthy and natural changes that are an important part of growing up.
Navigating the adolescent years can be more challenging for young people with a chronic illness because of the changes taking place in the brain and body. Treatments, procedures and appointments can feel like a burden, becoming more independent can feel harder, or risky. It's normal to have thoughts like 'it's not fair', 'why me?', 'I wish it would go away', and to feel different to friends. This can cause extra suffering on top of physical health challenges that are not going away.
