I'm comfortable with difficult conversations about medical conditions, physical symptoms, invasive treatments and traumatic events. There's not much I haven't heard about body parts, secretions and the medical kit that keeps people healthy and alive. I often speak to people feeling really distressed, who can't see how things will ever change. We work together; I have experience in helping individuals with the psychological impact of physical health challenges, and they’re the expert on themselves and their lives.
I integrate Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) approaches. I make adaptations for neurodivergence, learning difficulties and visual or hearing impairments where needed, to make experience of talking with me as helpful as possible. I can help children to process traumatic events, using sandtray techniques that bypass the need to put things into words.
I have worked in the National Probation and HM Prison services, and since 2005 in NHS community, inpatient, outpatient and rehabilitation settings. I have worked with children and adults with a range of problems including offending behaviours, depression, anxiety, OCD, phobias, PTSD, acquired brain injury, eating disorders and self injurious behaviours. Since specialising as a Paediatric Clinical Psychologist, I have worked at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, St John's Hospital Livingston and currently work part time at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital alongside a private caseload.
